OUR APPROACH

We’re pioneering a new way to approach medicine: Whole-Person Healing to the People.

“Whole-Person Healing to the People” is the basis of our work at Freedom Community Clinic. We honor the interconnection of mind, body, and spirit united with culture, community, and social justice. We are establishing a new paradigm that honors and uplifts the wisdom of Ancestral Medicine with the strengths of Western medicines and technologies— imagining beyond the limitations of the current paradigms that are disease-focused & profit-centered.

OUR VALUES

Whole-person healing. We believe that healing does not have to happen in a medical or hospital setting. Healing is a collaborative experience that can be fun, joyful, and restorative and take place within our communities where we gather and celebrate.

Culture is community. We believe that infusing cultural practices like dance, language, ritual and other traditions into modern healing practices is medicine. By honoring the lineage of these cultural practices, we strengthen connection with self and our community.

Intergenerational power. We are organized by young people and believe in the invaluable wisdom and power of our elders. Healing requires different people from different ages, backgrounds and lived experiences to come together to care for the mind, body and spirit.

Pushing boundaries. We believe in pushing the current limitations of standard medicine in order to honor the body, mind, and spirit. We envision a health revolution that nourishes and uplifts under-resourced communities and brings care directly to those who need it most.

Racial justice. We believe in prioritizing the healing and care for Black, Brown and immigrant communities that have been historically denied access to adequate medical care and/or their own cultural healing practices.

We believe in:

OUR ISSUE AREAS

ISSUE AREA 01.

Unequal access to quality, affordable medical and holistic health services

ISSUE AREA 02.

Chronic stress and disease of under-resourced communities

ISSUE AREA 03.

The medical-industrial complex

We address health issues that arise from structural and systemic poverty, racism, and inequality.

We are Oakland-rooted and led by Womxn and Gender Non-Confirming People of Color. We are each Creators, Healers, and Warriors who do this work because we witnessed our families, communities, and loved ones create their own methods of survival and love in spite of suffering from physical, mental, and/or spiritual anguish. All our healing services to the community are provided for free and/or at community scale. Rather than asking our communities to come to a sanitized, foreign, and unfamiliar setting, we go directly to our communities in the streets, their neighborhoods, cafes, youth centers, and freeway underpasses.

We believe in whole-person care for communities who face significant hardship and who need and deserve it most.

Research has shown that integrated care for people with chronic conditions improves physical and emotional symptoms, health, longevity, and morbidity/mortality outcomes drastically. However, in multiple studies, it was found that greatest alternative therapies use was reported by those over 29 years of age with more education and higher incomes.

We value the medicine and healing practices of our ancestors and Indigenous communities and believe it should be made accessible to all. We value the strengths of both traditional, Indigenous healing practices and Western medicine. We believe in integrating these strengths to help people come back to their wholeness and for a more just, liberating way of life.

Guided by our ancestral wisdom, we believe that healing means nourishing body, mind, spirit, and soul. We believe and affirm each person is their own healer and source of medicine. We challenge the medical-industrial complex that monetizes and profits from sickness and disease.

We believe that healing comes from within and started with our ancestors.
